Alopecia areata is a form of hair loss that usually causes patches of baldness. In some cases, develops total baldness. In many cases, the hair grows back, usually after several months. In some cases, the hair loss is permanent.

Alopecia means hair loss or baldness. There are several causes of alopecia and patterns. Alopecia areata is a form of hair loss.Alopecia areata can occur at any age but most cases develop first in teens and children. At least half of the people with alopecia areata develop their first patch of hair loss before 21. Men and women are affected equally. The condition tends to be milder when it develops in older age.

What are the symptoms of alopecia areata?

The typical pattern is of one or more bare patches on the scalp. These appear to be round in shape and to the size of a large coin. They develop quite quickly. In addition to the bald spot or spots, scalp usually looks healthy and there is no scarring. Sometimes there is some slight redness, mild scaling, mild burning or slightly itchy feeling on the bald spots.

What are the types of Alopecia?

Large bald spots to develop in some people. Some people lose all their hair. This is called alopecia totalis.
In a small number of cases lost all head hair, body hair, beard, eyebrows and eyelashes. This is called alopecia universalis.
